2012. The year which will be remembered by many people for 2 reasons. One for 'Dooms day' which is most likely to remain as a rumour. And the other for big bollywood blockbusters which were released in this year. Movies like 'Ek Tha Tiger', 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' and 'Rowdy Rathore' have collected more than 100 crores at the box office. Ek Tha Tiger has broken all records in Bollywood by being the highest grosser of all times. Film producers are ecstatic, throwing success parties, releasing merchandise and what not. Good for the industry. But looking at this carefully, I wonder how many people who were responsible for making these movies collect a 8 digit number, really liked these movies.
The general belief is that if a movie crosses 100 crores, its considered a hit. No matter how bad the movie is or how much people curse the movie after coming out of the theater, its just the numbers that matter to industry people. But I just feel this is ridiculous. For Instance, i recently watched 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' which came with a big hype on Diwali day. Of course SRK's acting was superb, movie shot in good locations but I didn't really appreciate the plot. And due to an average plot, whole movie seemed worthless. When I asked my friends and read comments on net, most of them had the same opinion. But the movie is considered a blockbuster and one of the best movies of Bollywood. The same thing happened with 'Ek Tha Tiger'. There was no reason for these movies to be called "special" and "blockbusters".
On the other hand, there are movies like 'English Vinglish', 'Vicky Donor' and 'Gangs of Wasseypur' which were made of low budgets, yet liked by people. These movies wont be called 'blockbusters' but it is these are the kind of movies which people like to watch. And there are movies like 'Barfi' which was liked and made money too.
And coming to the statistics part, collections of a movie is directly dependent on the number of theaters/ screens. This number is increasing in India as around 100 new multiplex open every month. And there is no surprise if a movie collects more than 400 crores someday!
Weather the movie should be called a Hit or Flop based on its collections is a debatable topic. Some people might ask if movie wasn't good, why did so many people watch it? 2 reasons: The way the movies were marketed and hyped. And the big star cast. Some might not agree with my opinion about Jab Tak Hai Jaan or Ek tha Tiger. People have their own interests and tastes. Just like food, even the taste of movies differ from person to person. Im not saying, all movies which cross 100 crore mark aren't good. We had '3 idiots', 'Barfi' etc which were class. But the question still remains: Is it fair for a movie to be called Hit based on the money it made or should the audience opinion be counted?
